Queens, New York—Susan Seinfeld, District Manager of Queens Community Board 11 and Eileen Miller, Health Committee Chair of same, awarded Dr. Daniel Weinstein DDS, Dr. Elie Marzouk DDS, Dr. Hanette Gomez DDS and Dr. Edward Portnoy DMD with the “Community Leader Award” glass plaque last night at the Fialkoff Dental Study Club. The award acknowledged their dedication in fighting drug abuse in the Greater NY Area by supporting the Office of Dr. Bernard Fialkoff DDS and the Fialkoff Dental Study Club’s free drug education program for NYC children. The award was given as part of a presentation to the 65 attending dentists encouraging all to get involved in community activities such as this community service program and the “Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives” oral health care program for youth (http://www.healthymouthshealthylives.org/). The event took place at the educational group’s monthly meeting at Laterna Restaurant in Bayside, Queens.
Dr. Bernard Fialkoff, Queens Periodontist and Dental Implant Specialist, founded the club in the mid ‘90s and originated using the Foundation for a Drug Free World’s (www.drugfreeworld.org <http://www.drugfreeworld.org> ) drug education program for NYC children by providing free presentations to schools and after-school programs throughout New York. Since February of this year, his office has conducted more than 80 free drug education events in the NYC’s five boroughs including at such schools as JH 190, Dreyfus Intermediate School 11 and PS/IS 217, and such after-school programs as YMCA’s, Bronx Works, Police Athletic Leagues and numerous others. Dr. Fialkoff said, “I care about what is happening to our community and to our country. It is up to us as doctors to do something about the conditions that surround us. It starts with one dentist deciding to improve his neighborhood and then expands to a city. This is why we are acknowledging Dr. Weinstein, Dr. Marzouk, Dr. Portnoy and Dr. Gomez tonight for their tremendous efforts in this good cause.”
Ms. Seinfeld acknowledged the group and their efforts, and encouraged each to get more involved in both the Foundation for a Drug Free World and “Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives” community service programs. She also was sure to tell the group that she is a very good dental patient, getting her two teeth cleanings a year. Ms. Seinfeld and Ms. Miller gave out the four awards reading the plaque, “Community Leader Award, Fialkoff Dental Study Club, October 9, 2012, with gratitude, Foundation for a Drug Free World.” Dr. Weinstein and Dr. Marzouk run a private practice in Long Island City, Dr. Portnoy’s dental practice is located in Bayside and Dr. Gomez’s practices are in Corona and Howard Beach.
Ms. Seinfeld, Ms. Miller and Dr. Fialkoff encouraged all study club members to set an example to the Queens dental community by conducting their own drug education events at schools in their communities or by providing oral health care events for youth. Dr. Fialkoff provided a custom kit with directions on how to conduct the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives, “Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives” event. The study club was founded in the mid ‘90’s and has an audience of 60-100 dentists each month. It focuses on raising dental excellence, standards and camaraderie in the New York boroughs. The club will continue its monthly meetings into 2012 with a presentation in November by Dr. Steven M. Katz and in December by Dr. Harold Edelman who will be instructing on the NY State Mandatory Infection Control Course.
